Do you have unmotivated clients?
Would you like to help your clients become internally motivated to change?
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. Originally developed for the treatment of problem drinkers, MI is now used with a wide range of concerns such as high-risk sexual behaviors, medication compliance, diabetes and heart disease management, smoking cessation and mental health problems.
MI is recognized as a “best practice” evidence-based treatment. There have been over 160 randomized clinical trails of MI and it has been the subject of over 750 publications. Over 65% of all studies on MI are now outside the field of addictions.
Participants in the 2-day training will learn:
• To understand the fundamental spirit and principles of MI
• To strengthen empathic counseling skills (OARS)
• To understand and practice the directive aspects of MI
• To experience and practice an MI style for meeting resistance
• To recognize the fundamental client language cues that allow continuing feedback and learning
• To elicit and strengthen change talk and commitment language
